Billerica, MA

Burlington, MA

Burlington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts with a population of around 25,000.

Burlington is now a suburban industrial town at the junction of the Boston-Merrimack corridor, but for most of its history it was almost entirely agricultural. In the 1950s, as soon as Route 128 was built, the highway kicked off an enormous expansion, and between 1955 and 1965 Burlington was the fastest growing town in the state.  In one five-year period, its population tripled as residential and commercial retail development exploded creating the town's present character.

Over the last 15 years, Burlington has experienced another boom in commercial growth.  Many new buildings have been built along the town's main road, Cambridge St. (Route 3A), which have ushered in new technology companies.   It is a well-positioned town in the state — located at the intersection of Interstate 95 and US 3.   Burlington is just 20 minutes from Boston, half an hour from New Hampshire, and an hour from Rhode Island.

Route 128 / I95, a circumferential highway around Boston, is considered the technology center of the East Coast.   Burlington's stretch of 128, between Route 3 and Winn Street is home to numerous sizable buildings housing major companies.

Billerica is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts with a population of around 41,000.   It is the only town named Billerica in the United States and borrows its name from the town of Billericay in Essex, England.

Billerica is located north of Boston along the Northwest Expressway of U.S. Route 3 and, is also situated near the Route 128/Interstate 95 High-Technology belt to the south and the Interstate 495 outer belt highway to the north.   Major American companies and corporations have their regional, national and corporate headquarters in Billerica.

The town was a contender for CNN Money's "Best Places to Live" in 2009.  In celebrating Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary, the magazine named Billerica one of the nation's top fifty towns for sports and recreation and the "Sportstown for the Bay State” because of its golf courses and sports facilities.

Notable residents of the town include: Asa Pollard, first man killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill, 1775;  Gary DiSarcina, former professional baseball player, AL All-Star (1995);  and Tom Glavine, former professional baseball player, elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (2014).

Concord is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts with a population of around 18,000.  Concord played a significant role in both American history and literature.

The area which became the town of Concord was originally inhabited by Native Americans. In 1635, a group of settlers negotiated the land purchase with the local tribe.  Their six-square-mile purchase formed the basis of the new town, which was called "Concord" - in appreciation of the peaceful acquisition.

The Battle of Lexington and Concord was the initial conflict in the American Revolutionary War.   It culminated in the Siege of Boston and outbreak of the war.

Concord also has a remarkably rich literary history centered in the mid-nineteenth century.

Notable residents and natives of Concord include: Kevin Garnett, NBA player;  Steve Carell, comedian;   and Tim Berners-Lee, British computer scientist, best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web.

Woburn is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts with a population of around 39,000.

It is located north of Boston, Massachusetts, and just south of the intersection of I-93 and I-95.

Woburn was first settled in 1640 near Horn Pond.   At that time the area included present day towns of Woburn, Winchester, Burlington, and parts of Stoneham and Wilmington.   In 1730, Wilmington separated from Woburn. In 1799, Burlington separated from Woburn; in 1850, Winchester did so, too.

Woburn was the scene of a high-profile water-contamination crisis during the mid to late 1970s.   The local community became concerned over the high incidence of childhood leukemia and other illnesses.

In 1982, citizens filed a civil lawsuit against two corporations suspected of contaminating the groundwater by disposing industrial solvents at their facilities in Woburn.   In 1998, a book written about the case was turned into a movie starring John Travolta and Robert Duvall, titled A Civil Action. The film was largely filmed in Bedford, Lexington, and on location in Woburn.

Notable residents of Woburn include: John Carter, former Boston Bruins player; and Charles Goodyear, inventor of vulcanized rubber.
