Air Conditioning Service and Repair

In New England, you'll find many car air-conditioning service and repair shops, but there are very few  with the expertise, know-how and trust that we have.   The Driveway  Doctors  offer a  wide  range  of   services including car air-conditioning recharges,  car-heating repair and service,  and automotive  air- conditioning problem solving.

Before the hot weather or summer arrives, you should have your car's A/C system checked to make sure it is working properly and blowing cold air.

Steps on How We Check an A/C System:

1. With the engine running, the compressor clutch should engage when the A/C is switched on.  If it does not, this indicates a low (or empty) refrigerant condition, or an electrical problem. Our technician will listen for rapid clicking or cycling noises at the compressor when the A/C is switched on.  If this is happening, this could indicate low refrigerant or some other problems.  Have it checked by our service technician.

2. The A/C system should be blowing cold air.  Luke warm air, or air that is barely cooled at all will indicate a low refrigerant charge in the A/C system.   A pressure gauge is used to check the refrigerant charge.   If it is low, our mechanic will add a refrigerant to bring the system up to full charge.

3. With the engine running and the A/C switched off, our technician will listen for knocking or rumbling sounds in the vicinity of the compressor.  These could indicate a failing compressor clutch, and/or loose mounting hardware.

4.  The A/C component-mounting bolts should be in place and tightly secured.   Our technician will make sure that nothing is loose or rattling around.

5.  Caps should be installed on the A/C system service ports.  This keeps out dirt, and also provides a seal for refrigerant.

6. We check all belts and we replace them at the first sign of any crack, wear, and glazing.   Also, we check for belts that vibrate while the engine is running and when the A/C is on.  This may indicate that a belt needs to be tightened, or it is a defective automatic belt tensioner.

7. We examine all A/C and cooling system hoses for cuts, abrasion, weak spots, and signs of leakage.  A leakage from A/C system hoses is often indicated by an accumulation of dirt and oil - particularly at connections and fittings.

8. We make sure that the condenser (in front of the radiator) is free of any obstructions such as leaves or insects. This reduces airflow, resulting in reduced A/C performance.  We then rinse the condenser clean, usually with a garden hose.

The air conditioning belt drives many components in a vehicle.   A broken belt can have a worse impact than simply an uncomfortable trip on a hot day .
